The Work And Ministry Of The Holy Spirit

WED Evening Prayer Reflection 063021 (Acts 8: 14-25) How can we be aware of the work of the Holy Spirit amongst us? The early church seems to have been super in tune with the workings of the Holy Spirit. Take Acts 8: 17 for example: “ Then Peter and John laid their hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit .” There was a distinct awareness that previously they had not received the Holy Spirit but they had accepted the word of God. What can we make of this? Where did we go wrong? Could it be that we are no longer sensitive to the movement of the Holy Spirit like with the Apostles? There are many questions that could come out of this: Is the level of our faith insufficient? A lack of understanding like Simon who thought he could buy this power? Sadly, this huge contrast between different eras and how the church has experienced the work and ministry of the Holy Spirit makes us want to speculate on the reasons why. During my seminary years, I came across a ministry called Ac

On Being Vigilant In Our Spiritual Walks!

TUE Evening Prayer Reflection 062921 (Feast of Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul) Today is the feast of Apostles Peter and Paul. It is fitting that we would talk about their lives, what they believed, what they suffered, their preaching… St Augustine wrote: “ Both apostles share the same feast day. Even though they suffered death on different days, they were as one. Peter went first and Paul followed .” It is believed that Peter was crucified head downward and Paul beheaded with a sword later. This was during Emperor Nero’s persecution of Christians in Rome. What best way to celebrate and embrace their lives than digging in our own lives to examine ourselves if we are still indeed firm in our faith? It would be what they would most have liked to hear, that the fruits of their labor were not in vain. In order to do this, I propose we focus on the word “vigilance.” It is defined as the action or the state of keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties. Other similar w

TUE Evening Prayer Reflection 061521 (1 Sam 1:21-2:11; Luke 20: 19-26) “ Gracious Lord, invade my being with your hope and your life, so that I may desire your will and experience the joy of being in your Kingdom. Enable everything about me: what I think, what I do, to discern your will. Amen ” The other day I saw a debate about corruption. The host went on tirade, bashing Nigeria to be the worst corrupt nation in the world. The guest disagreed and brought to everyone’s attention that those who point fingers at others are often plagued with an unparalleled hypocrisy. This raises the question about cultural differences in perceiving what society calls gifts and what it calls bribes. I am not an expert in this but there must be a difference. If we expect something in return and demand it, then clearly the gift becomes a bribe. Again, this can be tricky because the real issue is in our hearts. Now I visited an online dictionary called Britannica, it defines lobbying as, “ any att
